Helpful Exterior Door with Dog Doors Information
Glass Exterior Dog Doors vs. Screen Dog Doors
A glass entry door with dog door combines everyday access for your household and pet in one door. Its double-pane glass lets light into your entrance while helping reduce outside noise.
A screen dog door allows air to circulate while giving your pet a passage through the door. Choose this style when ventilation is your priority. A screen door does not provide the same weather protection or sound reduction as an enclosed glass entry door. Explore our exterior doors to compare other options for your entrance.
White Glass Door Materials and Finish
TENONER’s white glass entry doors combine solid wood with moisture-resistant MDF and a waterproof white primer to help resist moisture. The door thickness is 1.73 inches.
The protective finish supports outdoor use, but the installation still matters. Follow the product’s finishing instructions and ensure the frame, threshold, and seals are properly fitted to help keep water from entering around the door.
Pine Screen Door Protection
TENONER screen doors with pet openings are made from pine wood and are 1.73 inches thick. We recommend applying a suitable waterproof primer or exterior sealer to improve moisture resistance and help extend the door’s service life.
If you choose a primer, follow its instructions for any required exterior topcoat. Protect the wood before prolonged exposure to outdoor conditions, and maintain the finish as needed.
How Do I Choose the Right Pet Opening Size?
Choose the opening based on your dog’s measurements rather than breed or weight alone. Measure the widest part of your dog’s body and compare its height with the pet opening’s usable dimensions.
Also consider the step-over height—the distance your dog must step up to enter the opening. This is especially relevant for smaller dogs or pets with limited mobility. If multiple pets will use the door, make sure the opening accommodates the largest pet and is accessible to the smallest.
What Should I Measure Before Ordering?
Check your door opening’s width and height, the existing door thickness, and whether you are replacing only the door panel or also the frame. Both TENONER styles are 1.73 inches thick, so confirm that your frame and chosen hardware can accommodate that thickness.
Compare your measurements with the selected product’s installation requirements. Check the pet opening’s position on both sides of the doorway so your dog has a clear approach and exit.
Can I Trim an Exterior Door with Dog Door?
No. These doors cannot be cut or trimmed to fit a smaller opening. Cutting can affect the door’s construction and the fit of its glass, screen, or pet opening.
Select a size that matches the installation requirements for your doorway. If your measurements fall between available sizes, contact TENONER before ordering.
Does the Double-Pane Glass Reduce Outside Noise?
The double-pane glass helps reduce sound transmission through the glazed portion of the door. However, the overall result also depends on the pet opening, perimeter seals, frame, and installation.
Choose the glass style over the screen style when reducing outside noise is a priority, but do not expect the complete door assembly to be soundproof.
Can the Pet Opening Be Closed When It Is Not in Use?
Yes, these exterior dog doors are equipped with a sliding panel (or flap cover) that can be adjusted from inside the house to open or close the passage. For screen-mounted versions, a flexible flap is used, which automatically swings back into a closed position after the pet passes through.
Are the Frame and Installation Hardware Included?
The exterior door with dog door includes only the door panel itself. If you require additional components—such as a door frame, hinges, handles, locks, or sealing strips—these can be purchased separately on the product page.
